(02/28/14) Coventry - Leslie A. Rice, 85, died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the Alpine Nursing Home in Coventry. He was the beloved husband of the late Beatrice (Lambert) Rice with whom, prior to her death on January 19, 2008, he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 26, 2007.
Born in Coventry he was a son of the late Wilson A. and Susan A. (Howard) Rice. He served during World War II from June 27, 1946 to October 31, 1947 in the United States Army as a clerk typist with the Hq. Detachment, 3rd Quartermaster Group at Kobe, Japan. While working from 1948 - 1950 as a box maker at Ruckertâs Manufacturing in East Greenwich he re-enlisted in the Army on April 11, 1949. He was activated for a second tour of duty on September 21, 1950 serving until his discharge on November 2, 1951.
He worked at Amtrol as a Rollie for 26 years before retiring in December of 1993. He previously had worked for twenty years as a lace weaver.
He is survived by one daughter: Dawn R. Hodge and her husband Wes of Coventry; one son: Albert L. Rice and his wife Donna of Coventry; one brother: Roy A. Rice of Canterbury, CT; three grandchildren: Bryan Hodge, Justin A. Rice and Jennifer A. Rice and six great grandchildren: Brady, Haylee, Lilly, Khali, Ryann and Zophia. He was predeceased by seven of his siblings: Donald S. Rice, Wilson Albert Rice, Howard C. Rice, Arlene C. Williams, Dorothy M. Gordon, Elsie S. Pelletier and Elizabeth A. Fish.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 10:00 am at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Calling hours will be on Monday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Coventry.
