(07/28/14) Warwick - Joyce L. (Smith) Alexander, 87, died Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. She was the beloved wife of the late Royden A. Alexander.
Born in London, England, the daughter of the late Bernard T. and Jessie (Parker) Smith, she previously had lived in Montreal, Canada and Plymouth, MA.
Joyce was educated and married in England. During World War II she worked for the DE Havilland Aircraft Company. She and her late husband immigrated to Montreal in 1951. She worked for Sperry Gyroscope Company of Canada for three years as secretary to the Engineering Manager. The family moved to Rhode Island in 1968. She worked for the Cardi Corporation for six months in 1970. She was a former member of Signet Chapter 21 Order of the Eastern Star. She has belonged to Greenwood Community Church Presbyterian since 1970 where she was a deacon for six years, was Circle Leader of their Womenâs Association for four years and Chairman of the churchâs blood drives for five years.
She is survived by two daughters: Karen Ferreira & her husband Gary of Warwick and Teresa Porter & her husband Tim of St. George, UT. She was âNanaâ to her four grandchildren: Ryan Clifford, Evan Ferreira, Ashley Clifford & Jillian Downing. Her family remembers her as a loving mother and grandmother.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Greenwood Community Church Presbyterian, 805 Main Avenue, Warwick. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations made to the Greenwood Community Church Presbyterian Memorial Fund, 805 Main Avenue, Warwick, RI 02886.
