(05/24/15) Nelson, Richard H., 96, surrounded by his loving family, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Kent Hospital in Warwick. He was the husband of the late Frances B. (Florek) Nelson. Born in Natick, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Anna (Martin) Nelson. Prior to becoming a member of Our Redeemer Luther Church in Smithfield, Richard was an extremely active member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Warwick. He was a proud World War II United States Army Veteran, spending the majority of his military career in the China Burma India Theater at Wuchussu, China, where the troop constructed airfields. He was employed at Brown & Sharpe as a machinist before beginning his work career at the Naval Air Rework Facility at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. He retired in 1973 as an electronics supervisor. After retirement, he spent time playing golf, traveling, and caring for the love of his life: Frances, who suffered from Alzheimer’s. In his later years he became active in the CBIVA. He is a published author, with two books to his credit. He is survived by two sons: Gary P. Nelson and his partner the late Robert W. Gentile of Wilton Manors, FL and West Warwick, and Paul M. Nelson and his wife Leslie of Warwick, four grandchildren: Michael Nelson and his wife Lindsey, Ashley and her fiancé Eric, Justin and his fiancé Erica, and Victoria Nelson, one great-grandchild: Luca Nelson; two siblings: Lawrence Nelson of West Warwick, and Mildred Brackenbury of Warwick. He is predeceased by his brother Warren Nelson. He was the uncle to many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Saturday, May 30 at 11 am followed by interment in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Warwick. Visitation will be from 10 – 11 am prior to the service. Should friends desire, donations may be made to Crossroads Rhode Island, 160 Broad Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903.
