Sumiko O Lafond - , RI

(01/15/11) Sumiko Ogawa Lafond, 79, formerly of North Kingstown and Warwick, RI passed away on January 12, 2011 at Avalon Nursing Home in Warwick, RI. She was the wife of Laurent Lafond, USN Retired, and a proud supporter of both North Kingstown Pop Warner and High School Athletic programs. Sumiko was born October 7, 1931 in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan to Yoshi and Fusaichi Ogawa. She was the eldest daughter in a family of 10 children, five brothers and five sisters. Sumiko grew up in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. She was proud to proclaim that she was a survivor of both the Atom Bomb and the trials and tribulations of life. She maintained a strong and positive outlook of God, family and life in the Shinto tradition of her ancestors as well as a Christian with her marriage and the birth of her children. Sumiko loved her children and was proud of each. She loved to garden, quilt, knit, crochet, embroider and sew. Sumiko would often give of those things she made or grew to others. She was quick to lend a hand or help those in need. Earlier in life she performed work in a Nursing Home as well at various manufacturers in the area. Sumiko is survived by her sisters Mitsu of Virginia and Akiyo of Tokyo, Japan, her children Charles (USAF), Merrimack, NH, George (USAF), Merced, CA, Patricia, Warwick, RI and Steve (USAF), Gilbertsville, PA. Sumiko is also the grandmother of eight and has three great grandchildren. A simple graveside burial will be held Tuesday at 1:00 pm in East Greenwich Cemetery, First Avenue, East Greenwich. A memorial service is planned for April 30, 2011 to remember and celebrate her life. Further information can be obtained by E-Mail to clafond@comcast.net.
