(08/03/12) West Warwick - Donald J. Shurtleff, Sr., USMC, Ret., 78, of Pepin Street died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Anna M. (DeRosa) Shurtleff. Mr. and Mrs. Shurtleff celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on October 25, 2011.
Born in Providence he was a son of the late Edwin and Blanche (Lessard) Shurtleff. During his twenty years of service in the United States Marine Corps, he served three tours of duty in Vietnam before retiring at the rank of gunnery sargent on July 31, 1973. He then worked for seventeen years as a shipfitter for General Dynamicsâ Electric Boat Division, Quonset Point.
Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter Robin Nunes and her husband Donald of Hope Valley; his son Donald J. Shurtleff, Jr. and his wife Christine of West Warwick; his sister Ruth Giammarco of Warwick; his brother Edward Shurtleff of Scituate and by his five grandchildren: Elizabeth, Jillian and Ian Shurtleff, Eric and Sara Nunes.
His family is remembering him as a disciplined man who lived his life believing âonce a Marine, always a Marineâ and as someone who loved his grandchildren, especially camping with them. His favorite pastime was reading and he loved following the New England Patriots.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 6, 2012 at 10:00 am at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter. Interment with military honors will follow.
