(09/10/13) Warwick â Cornelius A. âConâ Cummiskey, 89, died peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2013 in his home in Warwick. He was the husband of Corrine R. Lareau-Cummiskey and the late Margaret-mary (McCarthy) Cummiskey.
Born in West Warwick, a son of the late Cornelius S. and Noella (Laferriere) Cummiskey, he lived in West Warwick for 60 years before moving to Warwick. For over 30 years he spent winters in Bradenton, FL.
Con was a graduate of West Warwick High School, Springfield College and Rhode Island College where he received his masterâs degree in guidance. He taught junior high history and was a guidance counselor in the West Warwick school system for 33 years. In the early years of his career, Con coached football for West Warwick, and, in his retirement, continued his love of coaching by assisting the freshman football teams at Bishop Hendricken High School.
He was a United States Navy World War II veteran serving aboard the USS Intrepid. He was also employed by the Gilbane Building Company. He was an active member of the West Warwick Historical Society and a proud member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick where he was a past president of the Pawtuxet Valley Chapter.
Conâs greatest joy was his family. He loved spending summers camping or traveling with his children, or at holiday get-togethers including his numerous and beloved nieces and nephews. His love of high school sports was evident in his constant presence at the sporting events of his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Mary Ann (and Paul) McKenney and Martha (and Thomas) Guglielmetti and a son Edward J. (and Marie) Cummiskey. He was also the father of the late Cornelius A. âNeilâ Cummiskey, Jr. Con was the proud Bampa of ten grandchildren: Meaghan (and Joshua) Wile, Bridget (and Andrew) Malachowski, Colleen (and Steven) Flachbart, Maura and Kerrin McKenney, Ryan, Patrick and Quinton Young and Jerome and Michael Cummiskey and of his great grandson Conor Wile. He was the grandfather of the late Conor Young and is also survived by one sister Ellen OâGrady of Dennis, MA.
Funeral Thursday, September 12 at 8:45 am from Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial in St. Ritaâs Church, 722 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick at 10 AM to which family and friends are invited. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 11 from 4-7 PM. Burial with military honors will be in St. Maryâs Cemetery, West Warwick.
