(09/15/13) September 12, 2013: Catherine Susan Harring passed gently away at Kent County Memorial Hospital in Warwick. She was the daughter of the late Thomas L. MacLean (originally of Pictou, NS) and Susie MacLean (nee Billard, of Burgeo, NFLD). Catherine was born in Providence and spent most of her childhood in Warwick, graduating from Aldrich High School. She was the wife of the late William L. Harring and resided in West Warwick and Coventry.
She is survived by her brother, Thomas L. MacLean Jr. and his wife Joyce, her children: Steven W. Harring and wife Ardith, of Manchester IA and Jami S. Desrosiers and husband Joseph A. Desrosiers, of Coventry, RI, grandchildren Jennifer S. Hampson and husband Augustus, of Rifle, CO, Megan Down and husband Ryan of Des Moines IA, Billie Sue Desrosiers and Jodie Cay Desrosiers, both of Coventry, RI., and three great grandchildren.
Catherine worked at The Gorham Silver Company as an executive secretary. She also worked for the Standard Times and the Coventry Public School System. Catherine particularly enjoyed the time she spent working with the Voc-Tech program at Coventry High School and fondly remembered her experiences there. She retired from the Coventry School Department after 25 years of service in 1994.
Catherine adopted more than one stray dog over the years and was a true \"Defender of Animals\". Catherine loved to cook and enjoyed traveling the world. She loved the forest, the ocean and gardens. A great reader of books, she always enjoyed learning something new. In her later years, she enjoyed playing cards, at the Coventry Senior Center. Catherine gave the best of her love and support to her family throughout her life. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
Calling hours are Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Gorton Menard Funeral Home in Coventry. There will be a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday morning at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Coventry. In lieu of flowers, donations to Defenders of Animals or The Shepherd of the Valley Methodist Church of Scituate RI would be appreciated.
