(01/06/14) CUMBERLAND- Charles W. Brod, Jr., 95, of Cumberland passed away peacefully on Monday, December 30th. He was the beloved husband of Florence M. (Stanton) Brod, whom he married April 18, 1948.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Olive (Robarge) Brod. He was the loving father of Stephen Charles Brod and Dennis William Brod, both of Wakefield, RI, and Linda (Brod) Whittaker and her husband, William, of Cumberland. He leaves his cherished grandchildren Ross Andrew and his wife, Yuko (Aso) Whittaker of Tokyo, Japan, Jillian Marie Whittaker of Providence, and Nathan Charles Whittaker of Cumberland. He was the doting great-grandfather of Lillia Yukiko and Charles Yuichiro Whittaker.
Charlie embraced life to the fullest. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the European theater. Upon returning from the war, he attended Penn State and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania to begin his life-long career in educating and encouraging children to reach their highest potential. An English and History teacher for most of his life, he served as Vice-Principal and Principal of Lincoln High School from 1964 to 1990. His donation to the high school of a baby grand piano is an example of his love of music and his generous spirit. He was an active member of the R.I. Association of Retired Secondary School Principals and the RI American Federation of Teachers. Charles and Florence traveled extensively throughout North America, the British Isles, and Europe. They enjoyed their many years together: bicycling, singing, gardening, dancing and visiting family in Pennsylvania. Time spent woodworking or near the ocean swimming, fishing, and just walking the beach brought Charlie much joy. He was loved and admired by many and will be greatly missed.
With his loving family in attendance Charles was laid to rest at the R. I. Veteranâs Cemetery in Exeter, RI. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Lincoln High School Band and/or the Philip Hulitar Hospice at 1085 Main Street, North Providence, RI, 02904.
