(02/22/15) West Warwick - Harry J. Leaman, MSGT. USMC Ret., 70, died Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Patricia M. (Davis) Leaman with whom he celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on September 5, 2014.
Born in Cambridge, MA, a son of the late John A. and Kathleen (White) Leaman, he had lived in West Warwick for the past 33 years.
Harry served in the United States Marine Corps for 22 years retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant. During his career he served as an Infantry Unit Leader and as a Drill Instructor. His decorations included The Gallantry Cross, an award given by the former Government of South Vietnam to military personnel, civilians, and Armed Forces units and organizations in recognition of deeds of valor or heroic conduct while in combat with the enemy and the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal (MCEM), awarded to personnel who have engaged in a landing on foreign territory, participated in combat operations against an opposing force, or have participated in a designated operation for which no other service medal is authorized. The Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal is one of the oldest medals of the United States Military still issued to active duty personnel. He was also the recipient of a Purple Heart awarded for injuries received in the Vietnam War.
He was a magician-at-large and a member of Ring 44 International Brotherhood of Magicians and Assembly 26 Society of American Magicians. He was a past president of Rhode Island Societies of Magicians. He was a former assistant Scout Master for Troop 11 Coventry BSA.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: John G. Leaman & his wife Yuko, Christopher M. Leaman and Dawn M. Leaman & her husband Richard. He was a devoted âPaâ to his grandchildren Aiden, Kaylee, Mia and Stefan Leaman. He was the brother of the late Jack Leaman, Florence Goodwin, Grace Wright and Patricia Cacciola and the uncle of several nieces & nephews.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 11:00 am at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Military honors will be offered immediately following the service. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 - 8:00 PM.
