(01/13/11) MARTELL, SISTER MARY ANDREA, 92, a Sister of Mercy and a retired educator, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland.
Born Helena Martell in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Bliss) Martell. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1935 and professed her vows on August 16, 1941.
Sister was a graduate of Woonsocket High School, class of 1935, and she earned a B.S. in Education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence and a B.A from Salve Regina College (now University). She was awarded an M.A. from Boston College and studied German in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. She also did postgraduate studies at Georgetown University and at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
During her education ministry, Sister taught in several elementary schools in the Diocese of Providence before being assigned to Salve Regina University to teach German from 1962 to 1972. From there she was assigned to St. Mary Academy-Bay View from 1972 to1989. In her life, Sister taught 51 years in the Diocese of Providence.
In addition to her religious family, the Sisters of Mercy, Sister is survived by nieces and nephews from the Egan, Friedrichs, and Dobrowolski families of Woonsocket. She was the sister of the late Louise M. Egan, Rev. Charles M. Martell, Florence Martell, Virginia Friedrichs and Irene Dobrowolski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 17, at 11 a.m.
in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland, RI. Visitation will be at the Health Centre on Monday from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 a.m..
