(03/14/12) BLAKE, SISTER AUDREY, 89, (formerly Sister Mary Wilhelmina), a Sister of Mercy and a retired educator and administrator, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland, RI. Born Audrey Jeanette Blake in Newport, RI, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Margaret (Harrington) Blake.
Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1940 and professed her vows on August 16, 1946. She earned a B.S. in Education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence, an M.A. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and completed post-graduate studies in Theology at Xavier University in Chicago.
Sister\'s educational ministries included the former St. Mary School in Pawtucket, St. Mary Academy-Bay View in East Providence, St. Patrick School in Providence, Salve Regina University in Newport, the former St. Xavier Academy in Providence, Mercymount Country Day School in Cumberland, and Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, MA. Sister served as executive director for the Advisory Council of Religious in Providence and also served as director of novices for the Sisters of Mercy for a year. In her later years, Sister was secretary for the Community Visiting Nurses Association of Attleboro, MA.
Sister Audrey was the sister of the late Ann Cullen, Margaret Milnor, Catherine Xavier, Eleanor Sheehy, Rita Phillips, Mary Theresa Blake, John J. Blake, and William J. Blake.
In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, Sister is survived by several nieces and nephews and three dear friends with whom she resided for many years, Elizabeth Baxter, Joy Stauffenberg, and Sandra Perry, all of Attleboro.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 16, 2012, at 11am in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland, RI. Visitation will be at the Health Centre from 9 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 a.m. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Rd., Cumberland, RI 020864 or to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Rd., Cumberland, RI 02864 will be appreciated.
