(04/12/12) Sullivan, Sister M. Gladys, 83, a Sister of Mercy and a retired teacher and accountant, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland. Born Barbara Ann Sullivan in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Gladys (Cameron) Sullivan. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1952 and professed her perpetual vows on August 16, 1958.
Sister Gladys earned a B.S. in Education and an M.A. from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence and then an M.S. in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.
As teacher, Sister began her education ministry at Our Lady of Mercy School, East Greenwich; she then went to St. Philip School, Greenville, St. Patrick School, Cumberland, St Aloysius Home in Greenville, Mount St Mary Academy in Fall River, St Margaret School in Rumford, and St. Xavier Academy in Providence. After fifteen years of teaching, she was appointed a bookkeeper at Salve Regina College (now University); she later worked in the business office at St. Mary Academy-Bay View in East Providence and then Femic Corporation in North Providence. Sister Gladys continued to minister at St. Joseph Hospital-Fatima Unit in the Business Department from 1983 until her retirement.
In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, she leaves many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edith Gately, Geneva Meany, Lois Bruzzi, Shirley Gretchner, and Raymond, Russell, Walter, and William Sullivan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m. in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland, RI. Visitation will be at the Health Centre on Saturday from 9:15 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 a.m. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
