Sister Margaret Murphy, RSM - , RI

(10/01/12) Murphy, Sister Margaret, 95, (formerly Sister Mary Colette), a Sister of Mercy and a recognized mathematics teacher, passed away on September 28, 2012 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland. Born Margaret Elizabeth Murphy in Providence, she was the daughter of John F. and Mary (Fealy) Murphy. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on February 2, 1936 and professed perpetual vows on August 16, 1941. Sister Margaret graduated from Classical High School, class of 1935. She earned a B.S. in Education from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence, an M.A. in Mathematics from Boston College, and did graduate studies in Mathematics at Holy Cross College and the University of Notre Dame. Sister began her teaching ministry in 1938 at Tyler School in Providence and moved in 1943 to St. Joseph School, Pawtucket. In 1944, she went to at St Ann School, Providence, and in 1947 was appointed to St. Xavier Academy, Providence. She continued at St Xavier until 1970 when she became a member of the faculty of Salve Regina College. In 1974 she was appointed to St. Mary Academy- Bay View and remained there until 1996. In addition to her academic duties, Sister was very involved with the students and was known for attending most of the basketball games in which BayView students played. Sister received many awards and honors. She was President of the RI Science Fair and was named outstanding teaching of the year by the RI Mathematic Teachers Association. She was honored with the Mother Catherine McAuley Award for outstanding service and was inducted into the St Mary Academy- Bay View Hall of Fame. In addition to her religious family, the Sisters of Mercy, she leaves a niece, Michelle Pearson of Riverside, and two nephews, Joseph Welch of Seekonk, MA, and Kenneth Welch of Vermont. . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland, on Wednesday, October 3, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be in the Warde Room at the Health Centre from 9:15 to 10:50 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
