(11/22/13) John Joseph Padien, Jr., 90, of Warwick, died peacefully Thursday, November 21, 2013 surrounded by his wife of 65 years, R. Claire Padien, and his family. Born 1923 in Providence, he was the son of the late John J. Padien, Sr., and Lena Padien (McCurdy). Raised in Mount Pleasant, Jack attended Blessed Sacrament School, LaSalle Academy and Rhode Island State College. He was a stellar athlete and was named an All-State Goaltender in ice hockey as a high school freshman.
In WWII, Jack served in the Pacific aboard the USS Bowers DE 637. He was decorated with the Philippine Liberation Medal for combat in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, awarded the Purple Heart and 4 Battle Stars for injuries sustained in a Kamikaze attack that killed or wounded more than half the shipâs complement.
Jack worked for Acme Cotton Products for 26 year and retired in 1984 as its Vice President. Jack was a Disabled American Veteran, a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association and a communicant of St. Catherine of Sienna Parish for 56 years where he served on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister.
Preceded in death by sisters Rita Branco and Doris Matteson and a daughter Mary, he is survived by his loving wife, Claire, his children, John J. Padien, III (Wendy), Mary Anne J. Padien (J. Douglas Havens), William B. Padien, (Allison Brown Padien), Claire Marie Padien (Russell Berdoff), Paul P. Padien (Susan), Daniel J. Padien (Rosemary Foster) and Anne Marie Hale (Michael); 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours at THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick, Sunday November 24 from 2:00-5:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday November 25 at 10:30 AM at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, 3250 Post Road, Warwick. Burial will be at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
