(12/01/11) Margeson, Sister Althea Marie, 86, (formerly Sister M. Irenes), a Sister of Mercy, a retired educator, physical therapist, and advocate for the poor, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland, RI
Born Althea Margeson in Islington, MA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Alice (Morrison) Margeson.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy on February 2, 1947 and professed her vows on March 12, 1954. She earned a B.S. in Education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence, and in 1945 she then gained certification in physical therapy at the Massachusetts School of Physiotherapy in Boston.
Sister\'s educational ministry began at St. Joseph School, Fall River in 1949. She taught at St. Anthony School, West Warwick, and St. Mary School, Pawtucket. In 1968 she began her ministry of physical therapy at Pine Harbor School in Pascoag and then taught special needs children at Nazareth School, Attleboro, MA. In 1983 she moved to the House of Faith at St. Patrick Parish, Providence, where she remained for many years serving the poor and providing hospitality to those in need.
In addition to her religious family, the Sisters of Mercy, she leaves two nieces. She was the sister of the late George M. Margeson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. in Mount St. Rita Chapel, 15 Sumner Brown Rd., Cumberland, RI. Visitation will be at the Health Centre on Monday from 9 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 a.m. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
